Hitachi announced shipping of  the new Ultrastar SSD400S.B series solid state drive, which is the industry’s first to use 25-nanometer (nm) SLC (single-level cell) NAND flash. The 2.5-inch SSD400S.B uses 6Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface to deliver high performance, and is available in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB capacities. Using SLC flash, the SSD offers up to 5x higher endurance than MLC-based SSDs.

The Ultrastar SSD400S.B delivers up to 536MB/s read and 502MB/s write speeds, and up to 57,500 read and 25,500 sustained write IOPS, reaching speeds 100 times faster than traditional hard drive. The 400GB model, according to Hitachi, can endure up to “35PB random writes over the life of the drive, which is the equivalent of writing 19.2TB/day for five years, ensuring greater utilization and reliability in the most demanding enterprise environments”.

Hitachi’s SSD400S.B also features the Advanced Power-loss Data Management technology for enhanced data integrity during power failure. The drive comes with or without self-encryption option and the self-encrypting models conform to the Trusted Computing Group’s (TCG) Enterprise A Security Subsystem Class encryption specification, helping customers protect sensitive data, and reduce the costs associated with drive retirement and reuse.
