Pentax introduces its 13th generation of rugged waterproof digital camera, the Optio WG-2 and the Optio WG-2 GPS that are the successor to the WG-1. The two new rugged cameras are adventure proof. They are not just waterproof to up to 40 feet (12 meters), but are also shockproof to withstand from drops up to 5 feets, crushproof to withstand weights up to 220 LBF (pound force), coldproof to sub-freezing temperatures of minus 10 degrees C, and dustproof to operate in dusty environments. A tough mineral crystal cover protects internal lens elements and a SP coating helps eater sheet off the optical surface.
The WG-2 and WG-2 GPS are 16 Megapixel cameras with backlit CMOS image sensor, a 5x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide angle, and a 3-inch LCD display. The WG-2 GPS includes GPS functionality for tagging photos with positional data, position logging and time syncing when travelling. Pentax’s new rugged cameras have the new Digital Microscope mode that uses 6 macro LEDs and detachable macro focus ring for perfect focus, smooth, even lighting around the smallest of subjects as close as 1 cm from the front of the camera. They also include Pixel Track, Digital, and Movie Shake Reduction to deliver blur-free, clear and sharp images and videos. You can also find Face Detection, Smile Capture, Blink Detection, Extended Dynamic range, and the Handheld Night Snap mode that produces a single blur-free, composite image from four images of the same scene
Pentax’s WG-2 and WG-2 GPS supports Full HD 1080p video recording at 30fps and offers HDMI output for playback of images and HD videos in HDTVs. They use SD/SDHC/SDXC for storage. The WG-2 will be available in black or vermillion red for $349.95 and the WG-2 GPS in shiny orange and gloss white for $399.95. They will be shipped in March. The new SportMount Chest Harness will be priced at $49.95 USD and should be available late spring or early summer 2012.
