Along with SATA IO’s announcement of the new mini-SATA (mSATA) standard, Toshiba present the the SG2 module, which is the world’s first mini-SATA SSD module. The low-profile SG2 is available in 30GB (THNSxB030GMCJ) and 62GB (THNSxB062GMCJ) models.
According to Toshiba, the mSATA SSD module, smaller than a business card, is only one seventh the volume and one eighth the weight of a 2.5-inch form factor SSD and consumes half the power. It offers up to 180MB/s read speed and 70MB/s write speed. Toshiba also announced the Half-Slim type SSD module that uses SATA II interface and comes in 30GB (THNSxB030GMSJ) and 62GB (THNSxB062GMSJ). It is also smaller than a business card.
Toshiba’s new small form factor SSDs support 28-bit LBA (Logical Block Address) mode commands, 48-bit LBA mode commands, multi-word DMA, Ultra-DMA modes and Advanced PIO commands. The mSATA module measures 30mm x 4.75mm x 50.95mm whie the Half-Slim SATA II module measures 54mm x 4 mm x 39mm. Toshiba will begin volume production of these small SSDs in October.
