Electronic door locks have been around for a quite long time. Depending on brands and models, you can unlock with a password, your fingerprint or a smart card. As smartphone is now part of our life, you may wonder if we can use our smartphones to unlock a door. Lock maker Kwikset has exactly what you want, introducing the Kevo door lock that lets you to use your smartphone (or tablet) as key. The lock is powered by Unikey’s technology.
The Kevo uses Bluetooth Smart Ready/4.0 to connect with your smartphone with the Kevo app. While standard lock still need you to take out the key, this smart lock, as it is connected wirelessly via Bluetooth, lets you unlock a door without taking your phone out of your pocket or bag. Once connected and setup, all you have to do to unlock the door is to touch the lock with your finger, and the lock will recognize your phone (sitting in your pocket) and unlock the door.
For those who don’t have a smartphone, you can use the included Kevo Fob that can also do the touch-to-open job. The lock is powered by 4 AA batteries, which is enough for a year of operation with normal use. Indicators and warnings will be given when the batteries running low. A physical key is also included, so you can still open the door when the lock has no power.
The Kevo mobile app, currently compatible with iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, allows you to create and send electronic key (eKey) to family or friends, so they can use their smartphone as a key to open the door.
