Nikon brings two new rugged cameras to its CoolPix line, the CoolPix AW110 and the CoolPix S31. While both of them are waterproof, dustproof and shockproof, the former is a high-end four-proof model designed to deliver durable performance for the outdoor adventurer, and the latter is a affordable family-centric camera that can be used in any environment to capture precious family moments.
The higher-end AW100 is tougher than its predecessor AW100. It is IP68-rated for dustproof and waterproof to up 18 meters (59 feet) for up to 60 minutes, and meets MIL-STD-810F for shockproof to withstand drops from up to 2 meters (6.7 feet). It is also freezeproof, capable of operating at temperatures from 10°C to +40°C (14°F to 104°F). The camera sports 16 Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a NIKKOR 5x optical zoom lens, and features lens-shift Vibration Reduction and Motion Detection to deliver clear, sharp images. It includes GPS support for adding location data to photos and videos, and also packs eletronic compass and built-in maps with POIs. Its built-in WiFi connectivity can be used for wireless transfer of photos to compatible smartphones or tablets. The AW100 is capable of Full HD 1080p video recording. It gets a 3-inch OLED display.
The CoolPix S31, on the other hand, is waterproof to 5 meters (16.4 feet), dustproof and shockproof (up to 1.2 meter/3.6 feet). Successor to the S30, the budget-friendly rugged shooter is also targeted at family users. It is equipped with a 10.1 Megapixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom NIKKOR lens. Users can press the dedicated video record button to start 720p HD video recording. The S31 has a 2.7-inch LCD display.
Nikon’s rugged CoolPix cameras both include Easy Auto Mode for easy shooting and a range of effects and filters for adding creative touch to photos and videos. The AW100 is available in orange, black, camouflage and blue for $349.95, and the S31, in white, blue, pink, brown and yellow, is more affordable at $119.95. Nikon will also release the AW110s that comes without world map pre-loaded.
