Hitachi Global Storage has just announced its new slim Z-series family 2.5-inch hard drive that is super slim at just 7mm, designed for use in laptop, handhelds, PVRs and other compact/portable devices. Three families are introduced including the Travelstar Z7K320, Travelstar Z5K320 and CinemaStar Z5K320.
The Travelstar Z7K320 is the industry’s first 7mm 2.5-inch 7200RPM hard drive. It has 16MB cache while the Travelstar Z5K320 is a 7mm 2.5-inch 5400RPM hard drive with 8MB cache memory. The former offers 1.8 watts (W) read/write power and 0.8W low power idle and the latter delivers 1.6W read/write power and 0.55W low power idle.
Hitachi also announced the CinemaStar Z5K320 for AV streaming devices. It is more or less that same as the Travelstar Z5K320 getting 5400RPM spin speed and 8MB cache. The drive gets an improved protection scheme for power fluctuation and enhanced Thermal Fly-Height Control for improved error rates.
These Z-series hard drives are available in 160GB, 250GB and 320GB capacities and use SATA 3Gb/s interface.
