Up till now, the standard format for next-generation optical storage is divided into two camps, the Blu-Ray led by Sony, Matsushita and the HD-DVD led by Toshiba, Philips.
Luckily, the Japanese chip maker NEC announced that it began shipping a chip compatible with both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats in next-generation optical storage media.
If other hybrid technology is developed, the new chip could lower costs to build dual-format players, helping consumers and the movie industry sidestep the rivalry between the two opposing camps.
