With the success of the GALAXY Note line, Samsung decided to expand its range of phone-tablet hybrid (phablet) with the all-new GALAXY Mega line. Needless to say, the Mega is even bigger than the super-sized Note, featuring a Mega-sized display of 5.8-inch or 6.3-inch for an enhanced multitasking capabilities and viewing experience. Yet, with ultra thin and portable form factor, you can still put them in to a pocket or hold in on hand. Instead of Samsung’s signature Super AMOLED, the Mega line uses TFT LCD screens.
The Mega 6.3 is powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz processor and 1.5GB of RAM (Samsung, why not 2GB?). Its 6.3-inch touchscreen has HD (likely 1280×720) resolution. There are 8 Megapixel main camera and a 1.9 Megapixel front-facing camera and it includes Drama Shot, Sound&Shot (that captures 9 seconds of sound and voice together as the picture is taken), Beauty Face, Rich Tone (High Dynamic Range), Continuous shot features. The phablet supports HSPA+ and LTE mobile networks, and as you can see in the picture below, there is DUOS label on top, meaning Samsung will release a Dual SIM version as well. It comes in 8GB and 16GB capacities and supports microSD card up to 64GB). A big 3200mAh battery is included for extended hours of use.
The smaller 5.8-inch model, on the other hand, gets a qHD 960×540 touchscreen. It comes with the same 8 Megapixel camera and 1.9 Megapixel front camera. This model comes without LTE 4G support and is available only in 8GB capacity. The battery is slightly smaller with 2600mAh capacity.
Both Mega devices runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. They come with a range of unique Samsung features, including the the newly introduced Air View that allows users to preview information in emails, photos in Gallery, and speed dial contacts with their fingers. The Multi Window and Pop Up Play allows users to fully utilizes the Mega display. There are also S Memo, S Planner, S Translator, S Voice, Story Album, ChatOn messaging app and WatchOn app that turns the device into a remote control. Both models support Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/GLONASS and WiFi 802.11b/g/n with WiFi Direct connectivity.
Samsung will release the GALAXY Mega globally in May.
