Western Digital (WD) adds to its TV media player line the new WD TV Play (model WDBMBA0000NBK-HESN) that competes directly with Roku’s offerings. Like other media streamers, the little box can stream movies, TV shows, songs and other online content directly to your big-screen HDTV from services like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and Spotify. It also keeps you connected to your social network.
The TV Play supports Full HD 1920×1080 video and is able to play common file formats, including XviD, MKV, H.264, MOV, WMV9, MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, Dolby True HD…etc. In addition to online content, WD’s player can also play videos, music and songs from USB storage drives; and you can also connect your digital camera or camcorder via the USB port to view images and videos directly without a PC. The box provides both Ethernet LAN port and WiFi connectivity for Internet connection, and supports DLNA for media streaming.It offers HDMI and composite (RCA) video outputs and SPDIF digital output.
The included remote control has dedicated buttons for Netflix, Vudu and Hulu Plus. You may also use the WD TV Remote app to turn your iOS or Android devices into a remote control. The WD TV Play is priced at $69.99.
