Sony unveiled its new flagship Android smartphone, the quad-core Xperia Z, at the CES 2013. Combining a styish, unique design with high-end hardware, the Xperia Z is built to challenge Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.

Measuring just 7.9mm thin, Sony’s Xperia Z features a OmniBalance design with subtly rounded edges and smooth reflective surfaces on all sides. The round-shaped machined power button on the right side makes the phone unique. With durable, tempered Dragontrail glass and anti-shatter film on the front and back, and IP55/57 dust and water resistance, the handset is highly durable.

As Sony’s latest flagship Xperia, the Z packs a range of new technologies. It features a 5-inch Full HD 1080p 443ppi Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 for super brightness and clarity, and a 13 Megapixel Fast Capture camera with Sony’s own Exmor RS for mobile, which is the world’s first sensor with HDR (High Dynamic Range) video for smartphones.  With HDR technology that gives clear images against strong backlight, Superior Auto and Noise Reduction, users can capture super sharp images and videos whatever the condition. Other than HDR video, the 13 Megapixel camera is also capable of 10fps burst shooting at 9 Megapixel resolution and capturing still images during video recording. The phone also packs a 2 Megapixel front-facing camera with Exmor R for clear and sharp video chat. Both cameras are capable of Full HD 1080p video recording.

The Xperia Z is boosted by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (APQ8064+MDM9215M), with Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM for a true flagship performance. It supports 4G LTE network as well as Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. You can also find NFC support and one-touch sharing of music, photo and videos with Sony’s NFC-enabled devices. The phone’s Battery STAMINA Mode will improve the standby time by four times or more by automatically shutting down battery-draining apps whenever the screen is off and starting them up again when the screen is back on”.

Running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Xperia Z comes pre-loaded with Sony’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited entertainment services, WALKMAN music app and Facebook social integration. While the Z is Sony’s main player for 2013, the company will also release in some markets the Xperia ZL that comes in a smaller form factor with a different design with curved, plastic back. This little packs the same hardware but lacks dust and water resistance.
