Olympus updates its PEN series with the new PEN Lite E-PL5 and PEN mini E-PM2 compact Micro Four Thirds cameras. With nearly identical specifications, the two new PENs have a different form factor, yet both with retro styling. The E-PM2, the lightest and smallest Olympus PEN, is an entry-level model, while the E-PL5 is intended for experienced photographers featuring an all-metal body and a swiveling monitor.
The E-PL5 and E-PM2 both sport 16.1 Megapixel High-Speed Live MOS Sensor and the new TruePic VI image processing engine found on the flagship OM-D E-M5. With this combination, the cameras deliver outstanding low-light performance with a maximum ISO of 25,600 and an increased dynamic range for finer expression of gradations between dark and bright areas. AF Illuminator, the bundled FL-LM1 flash and In-body image stabilization with three modes also help deliver clear, crisp photos in any shooting situation, even in low-light. They also feature the FAST (Frequency Acceleration Sensor Technology) AF system for speedy focus. It provides 35 separate focus points spread over nearly the entire sensor, making it possible to pin-point accurate focusing on small subjects wherever they appear in the frame. High-speed continuous shooting can be done at 8fps.
Olympus’ new PEN cameras both have a 3-inch touchscreen display with an Anti-Finger Print coating and a wide 176-degree angle of view. The E-PL5’s swiveling LCD can rotates up 170 degrees for simple self-portrait shooting. With touchscreen and the Touch AF Shutter, users can tap to choose the subject to focus and capture the photo. To offer creative shooting experience, the PL5 and PM2 also cme with 12 in-camera Art Filters and 7 art filter effects. They are capable of Full HD 1080 video recording and users can even shoot videos with Art filters. Multi-motion image stabilization is included to correct blur during video shooting. You can also find in-camera RAW data editing function, iAuto mode with 23 scene modes, 3D Photo Mode, Live Guide for previewing effects as you adjust them. While the PM2 has built-in grip, the PL5’s grip is detachable for users to change the feel of the camera.
The PEN E-PL5 and PEN E-PM2 will be available in October. The PEN E-PL5 is priced at $649.99 for body-only and $699.99 for kit with MSC M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED m14-42mm II R f3.5/5.6 Zoom Lens. The PEN E-PM2 is available for $549.99 for body-only and $599.99 for kit with MSC M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED m14-42mm f3.5/5.6 Prime Zoom Lens.
