Hitachi announced two new series of 2.5-inch 375GB/platter hard drives, the 5,400RPM Travelstar 5K750 and the 7200RPM Travelstar 7K750. These 750 series drives offers highest capacities in a standard 9.5mm two-disk design, getting 500GB, 640GB and 750GB capacities.
The Travelstar 5K750 comes with 8MB buffer memory while the 7K750 gets 16MB. Both of them use Serial ATA 3Gb/s interface. They feature Thermal Fly-height Control (TFC) for better soft error rate and improved reliability, Hitachi’s TrueTrack Technology for tracking accuracy in high shock or vibration environments, and Advanced Format technology that increases the physical sector size on hard drives from 512 bytes to 4096 (4K) bytes. The Travelstar 7K750 is a self-encrypting drive (SED) designed to meet the industry-standard Trusted Computer Group (TCG) Opal Storage Security specification.
Hitachi is shipping the Travelstar 5K750 and the retail version starts at $129.99 while the 7K750 will be available in Q1 2011. Hitachi will also release the Travelstar 5K750 and 7K750 EA models designed specifically for use in blade servers, network routers and video surveillance systems.
