Samsung announced two new Back Side Iluminated CMOS imager, the 5 Megapixel S5K4E5 optimized for smartphones and the 14.5 Megapixel S5K2N1 for digital cameras and digital camcorders. Smasung’s new sensors show 30 percent enhancement in low light sensitivity over conventional front side illumination imagers of the same pixel size.

The S5K4E5 is a 1/4-inch optical format 1.4 micron 5 megapixel CMOS image sensor that supports full resolution real-time video at 30fps. It has a wider chief ray angle that reduces the height of the imager package making it attractive for slim, small form factor smartphones with demanding z-height requirements.

The 14.6 Megapixel S5K2N1, a 1/2.33 inch optical format 1.4 micron sensor that is also capable of handling full resolution video recording at 30fps. It leverages Samsung’s low-power 90 nanometer logic process technology and a dedicated thermal enhanced plastic lead ceramic carrier (TePLCC) package for more effective heat dissipation.

The S5K4E5 and S5K2N1 are also able to capture Full HD resolution video at 60fps. Samsung will begin mass production of former in Q4 2010 and the latter in Q1 2011.
